This site has triggered many memories. I lived on 228th St and 138th Ave-a block away from 156. Laurelton (and the 50s) was such an innocent time and Laurelton now seems like a very protected place where growing up was relatively calm and totally safe. I've lived in Brookline, MA for the last 32 years and brought up two daughters while teaching and consulting. In some ways Brookline is very similar to Laurelton with a strong community and close relations with neighbors. I see many familiar names on the web site and it has brought back many pleasant memories. I'd be pleased to hear from people from that that time.

Currently living in Boca Raton, FL. Attended PS 156 Queens, class of 1953.  I recently heard from Faith Martin (after59 years) who, like me graduated from PS 156 in 1953. We learned (much to our surprise) that our sons knew each other an both were in Miami Beach, FL the day before I heard from Faith, for the first time. What a lovely surprise.
It has been a long time since I have been back to Laurelton, however I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the pictures of PS 156 and Merrick Road through the years. After leaving Laurelton, I graduated from NYU in 1961 and the Univ. of Calif. (Berkeley Law) in 1964. I am retired and live in Boca Raton, FL. Prior to retirement I practiced law in NYC and was a Professor at NYU (where my son is presently a trustee) Unfortunately I missed the Florida reunion this past March and look forward to another one. I have a wonderful son and daughter and two lovely grandchildren.  I look forward to seeing updates in the website and will help to keep it going,

Currently living in New York, NY. I have visited the site several times and have seen many familiar names. One common theme that runs through everyone's comments is that specialness that we all felt about Laurelton and what a unique time it was. I have always stayed around NY and have lived in Manhattan for the past 40 some years. My father first rented a house prior to 1939 on 229th Street and we bought and moved to 135-08 230th Street ,just a block from P.S. 156. I was a member of AZA. I had several great years enjoying my last few years in high school. I am still friends with Arthur Handler and Carlee and Happy Cohen. My sister Evelyn has kept in contact with a number of people as well, so we hear about the reunions in Florida. I went to the one at the Lawrence Country Club 10-15 years ago. That was great and wish we could do it again. Would be happy to hear from anyone of the old group.

What a wonderful trip down memory lane this website has provided. I lived at 139-17 226 St., right across the street from Nancy Bradie. My Dad, David, was one of the owners of Dial Drugs. I'm married to Gary, a Westchester import, thanks to the Throggs Neck bridge, otherwise I'd have been geographically undesirable. We have two children and two grandchildren. We split our time between North Woodmere and Boca Raton. Stroll down memory lane: Remember Sheppy's Appetizing Store on Merrick Road? He continued doing what he knows best in Merrick for many years. His associate Ray was a neighbor of ours here in NY. When our son attended Hebrew High School in the early '80s one of his teachers was Rabbi Goredetzer from the Laurelton Jewish Center Hebrew school. It was so exciting to see names of friends from the "good old days". I'd love to hear from anyone out there who remembers me.

Currently living in Plantation, FL.  I moved from 135-53 232rd. St. in 1951. Looking at the stores I remember a fur shop on the south side between 229 and 231 called Shadick's. When I would be going to the movies I would stop by. In the back there was Moe Shadick, my grandfather who lived on 229 and some other 'old' guys playing pinochle; they were always good for some small change.  I kinda belonged to a hobby shop on Mentone. I used to build and fly model planes. Flo, who ran the shop and her husband who had a different job, often took the kids to the abandoned airstrip behind the Sunrise Drive-In to fly our planes. I used to cut Hebrew school and flip baseball cards in the P.S. 156 school yard.  We had an empty lot across from our house. We dug big foxholes and built fires to roast potatoes. They would be all burned on the outside but soft and white on the inside, what a treat. When I got home my mom would smell the smoke on my clothes and I was sent to my room, worth it.
We used to go horseback riding. When we had some extra money we rented from Whitey's and rode thru what became north Woodmere. We got cheap horses from John's. I think they pulled wagons during the week thru the weeds/swamp that ran up to Rockaway Blvd. and the edge of the airport.

How wonderful to find browse site! Laurelton was such an idyllic place to grow up. I pretty much left the area when I went away to college where I met my husband, but still stay in touch with some old friends. Don & I got married when I graduated. He was drafted (remember the draft) and our first couple of years were spent in Germany. When we came back we moved to NJ, first Englewood, then Ridgewood.

In 2000 we retired, sold the home we'd lived in for 32 years, and bought a motorhome. Our plan was to travel for a year or two, and then decide what to do next. After eight years as vagabonds, we're still going. We ski during the winters, cycle and hike in the summers, and are loving our life. We have friends all over the country now but would be happy to have a few more, if any of you care to write.

Was told about this sight by a new friend.  Hi, Does any one remember the Pasta Shop next to the Grand Union store? It was between GU and the Rug Shop. You could watch them make ravioli on the way to school. Across Merrick Road from the GU was an Italian Cheese shop, don't remember the name but it was owned by a classmate of mine in P.S. 38. Also at the corner of Merrick and 233rd NW was a dog kennel. Used to reek and was noisy. Roseann V.

Currently living in Huntington, NY.  I don't know what led me to Google Laurelton but I was shocked to find this website with names and emails of so many friends. I read the great Charlie Stein's comments and saw my name among all the friends he listed that I played ball with and remember so fondly. Then I saw a listing of Artie Kern and the names of Bob Fidlow, Bernie Schaefer. I remember so many that are listed who played basketball with me at 156 from morning to dark. Artie Kern and I drove down to Georgia Tech (in the summer of 1952) I think. Bernie Schaefer, togehter with Gary Gould planned a surprise 16th birthday party for me. That night I thought I was going on a long sought triple date. Sue Napelbaum who is also on the site and living in GA now was my date. What a disappointment to find that instead of being with Sue I was with her plus 40 kids at my own house! I still tell that story now and then to my wife Ann (Miss Subways 1963) and my sons and I will to my grandchildren.

Frank Ormsten and I were law partners for many years and we go out regularly to dinner. I also email Bob Fink who lives in Canada. I have been lucky so far - playing pretty good tennis still. In my 60s I joined a group of guys who played basketball and played for a couple of years. But it was a shock (moron that I am) that I didn't jump very high or shoot very well. I probably never did but I thought I did. The highlight of that experience was shocking a young guy by catching up to him after he stole the ball from me and raced down the court. He thought I was left in the dust but I blocked his shot. It brought back memories of better days.

And of course there were so many girls besides Sue (who never dated me again) that were such good friends like Linda Cohen, Bunny Wayne (my first girl friend and the first who dumped me), Flossie Gilmore (the second who dumped me), Linda Spillett, Joan Starr, Norma Feldhun, Debbie Halpern, Joan Alpern and on and on. I was the President of the Laurelton Jewish Theatre Workshop - Joe Romano the Director of the plays we put on and I and my sister Dorothy were the only Christians so you can see that it was a progressive and ecumenical group to elect me president. I have the picture of all those who were in it. Larry Bard was our male lead singer after my audituion with cracking voice proved that not every Italian-American could sing like Frank Sinatra.

I hope to write to and hear from old friends. Growing up in Laurelton remains one of the highlights of my life.

Currently living in State College, PA.  My brother Steve, who graduated from Andrew Jackson HS '59, just informed me of the Laurelton site. I would love to reconnect with friends from my years at Far Rockaway ('49-'53) and those who attended PS 132 and 156 during that period. After finishing Far Rockaway, I attended Kenyon College (along with Dick Kauf, and then went on to Cornell Medical College (currently Weill Medical College of Cornell University) at 69th and York Ave. in NYC. After completing medical school, I decided on a career in biomedical research and have pursued that at the University of Chicago, SUNY-Downstate Medical Center and Weill Cornell, where I have been since 1982. Although still working at Cornell, I am currently phasing out my laboratory research in cardiac and skeletal muscle development. Over the years I have served Cornell as Dean of the Graduate school of Medical Sciences and Chairman of Cell and Developmental Biology. I remain active in medical education and work on several journal editorial boards. Currently, Barbara Lohse and I are living on the upper East Side of Manhattan; we both love the cultural and culinary delights of the City.   I have five children ranging in age from 16 to 44, and 6 grandchildren. My relaxation is spent playing golf and the violin - both with mediocre success.

I remember Robbins Candy Store on Merrick Road & I remember several of the early Laurelton families but very little else. After the war ended, we left Laurelton.  Today I have children, grandchildren, & a husband. We live in San Diego most of the year but twice a year we spend time at our condo in Delray Beach, Florida. Lived at 130-40-226th st from 1945-46 till 1954 when I got married to a Springfield girl (Myrna Kneessy). Lived in Hollis, Springfield and now in Selden L.I. and in New Harbor, Maine. Friends from Laurelton and Springfield were (and are) Ed Yelsits, Herbie Frick (deceased), Mike Levey, Billy Satnick, Bob (ZIP) Cohen, Gil Murdy (deceased), Steve Fuchs, Frank Lella and many more. Girlfriend from Laurelton was Sue Feltman. Worked as a kid washing cars on Sat. mornings out of Tom's Barber Shop on 226th st (Tom Giaccone). Worked as stock and delivery for North Shore Food (Abe Dolowich) and the luncheonette across Merrick Rd. from Abes. Worked as an adult for Republic Aviation (Port Washington), Geffner Motors (Laurel) and as a mechanic and manager for a repair shop in Flushing and Corona (the iron triangle). went back to school and taught Auto Mechanics for 32 years, now retired.

The stores on Merrick Rd. between 226th and 227th on the north side were Charlie's Bar, Si Gross candy store (later Herbie and Minnie), Kent Cleaners, North Shore Food, Samuel's Dry Cleaner, Hershey Travel, Kosher Deli, Tony's Riviera Italian Restaurant and Schwartz Pharmacy (my friend Al Constantine was delivery boy for Schwartz). I moved to Laurelton at the age of five, in 1947 and lived there until I married in 1963. My address was 131-72 226th Street. My wife, Rosa Goldberg Greher, lived close by, in Springfield Gardens, on 218th Street and 133rd Avenue - only seven very short blocks from my home.

My family was a member of the Jewish Community House located on 223rd Street, near 133rd Avenue. My wife's family was a member of the Jewish Community Center located about 229th Street and 137th Avenue. We were married at the Jewish Community House on 9/1/1963.

I attended P.S. 132 and then went on to Edgar Shimer Junior High School (in a special progress class); Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, Columbia College (B.A. in chemistry) in Manhattan, M.I.T. (Graduate Chemistry Department for two years) in Cambridge, MA, and finally Bernard Baruch school, City University of New York (for two years of night school in the graduate business school) in Manhattan.

My wife attended P.S. 132, and then went on to J.H.S. 156, Andrew Jackson High School, the Art Students League in Manhattan, The Frank Reilly School of Art in Manhattan (with a two-year stay at the art school of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts).

Recently my wife and I returned to Laurelton. It looks great, it has really held up! We visited inside her home and viewed, from the outside (since nobody was there), my home. Her house seemed much smaller then we remembered. The current resident is a widow who was very pleased to meet us and show us the house. Some things had changed in the house, mostly the decorations, but the structure was unchanged. The front yard was the same but the back yard was not as full of bushes and trees as we remembered.

After Queens College graduation in 1958, I returned to P.S. 156 to teach along with two other Laurelton friends. A few of the same teachers were still there at that time.  I lived in Laurelton and attended P.S. 156 graduating in 1950 and then attended Far Rockaway High School graduating in 1954. I understand there is a separate Laurelton chat room but my surfing has provided no such site. Would you know anything about it? Currently living in Powell, OH. I remember Laurelton very fondly and how great it was to grow up always feeling safe and comfortable. I lived at 130-25 236th St. I didn't go to Jackson but instead went to Hunter College High School. I belonged to ALP sorority. Our family attended and belonged to the LJC. My Bat Mitzvah was there in 1953. Many years later, because of what I learned there, I became a Hebrew teacher and Bar/Bat Mitzvah coach at our present temple. Growing up in Laurelton shaped my life and the way I think about the world today. I'd love to hear from anyone who remembers me.

Currently living in Plainview, NY. It's been a long time. I moved to Laurelton when I was about 12 Years old in 1946. I moved from Baisley Park in Queens and was attending PS 142 and was in a Rapid Advance Class and I continued there,(takeing two buses every day) until I graduated and went to Far Rockaway. Of course I took the LIRR and that was a life saver as my friends helped me with my math on that ride to school. I belonged to the AFP fraternity and played both softball and football on their team. I had a job as delivery person for Dial Drugrs when it opened on a borrowed bike. It was great.

Ms. Dooley, who looked as though she was poured into that dress. Man, what a figure! Ms. MClean, who showed us what to do during an air raid. Remember that and all the whoops and hollers. The endless stickball and handball games in the schoolyard, and the softball games.

This website is a blast from the past. What a great time and great neighborhood to grow up in. We lived on 125th Ave. between Francis Lewis and 233rd Street. In the red attached houses. Our block was loaded with kids and we all played outside after school every day. We never locked our doors at the house, and my Dad would leave the keys in his car ALL the time. We moved into our home around 1947 or 48. I started school at 147, then moved to 176 when it finally opened, than 156 when I graduated in 1955 and then graduated AJHS in 1959. Some might remember my older brother Ken or my younger sister Sue. He is living in Boynton Beach Florida, Sue is out here with me in Phoenix Arizona. If anyone remembers me feel free to email me.

Wow...just found this site by accident...so many great people to remember. Thanks so much Skip for doing this labor of love. I lived at 138-60-231st St. I graduated PS 156 in 1955 and went on to Dwight Prep in NYC. (Parents refused to send me to Jackson). Graduated from LIU, Bentley and became a CPA in 1977....started my own company in 1980 turning around troubled companies. My sister Eve...went to Rhodes and Parsons school of design and is now deceased. I lived in Rosedale off 147th Avenue from 1958 until 1966, attended P.S. 138 and Far Rockaway H.S., however, all my friends attended Jackson H.S., and I spent most of my time in Laurelton. So much fun contacting people from Laurelton and FRHS. I have only fond memories of my years in Laurelton. So glad my parents moved there from rural N.J. when I was 10 years old. I lived at 131-27 225 St. and attended P.S.`132 and graduated in 1956 from FRHS. My husband Bob grew up in Laurelton also. His name was Yankow then, changed to Marshall before we married in 1960. Three children, one deceased. Bob is a Chiropractor and Clinical Nutrtionist. One of our daughters is a Chiropractor as well. We have three grandchildren who live in Weston, CT. which is down the road from our house in Westport. Looking for Doris Abrams.

I lived at 131-20 227th Street. My sister is Ellen, and brother is Mark. I live in Merrick, after moving from Laurelton. I am the mother of four sons (one deceased) and blessed with seven wonderful grandchildren—all living in the area. It was exciting to find the Laurelton website. It certainly brings back many fond memories and good times. My family moved here when I was 15— I had fun riding the LIRR to Far Rockaway HS—graduated in 1956. I enjoyed walks along Merrick Road & going to the movies, shopping at Sharry’s Bakery, Zickerman’s Hardware Store, Raab’s Ice Cream Shop. My neighbors were the Ferrara’s (still good friends with Pat), Reich, Margolis and Stark. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me.
